Update! TruNorth Solar Alert: Solar Net Metering is in Jeopardy – We Need Your Voice!

A big THANK YOU to our Solar Advocates! Update from MnSEIA as of 4/9/25

Sharing a somewhat positive update after today’s senate hearing. Two amendments were accepted by the Committee (one was around grandfathering for existing solar customers). The House Omnibus bill is up. Net Metering is not included, it is “Lights on” only. We are not totally out of the zone of danger of this passing this year, but it’s a positive step in the right direction because it gives the House a strong negotiating position. Keep those calls to the Senate up, they are working.” You can track the official status and amendments of SF 2393 and other bills on the Minnesota Legislature’s website.

We Need Your Voice

We’ve got some important news to share, and the TruNorth Solar Team needs your help, as Minnesota’s clean energy future is at stake!

Here’s the Deal

Minnesota SF 2393, an energy omnibus bill, includes provisions related to solar energy production incentives, environmental review processes, and net energy metering for qualifying residences and facilities. The bill’s provisions, particularly those related to the solar industry, would greatly impact net metering and our customers, as well as the industry as a whole.

We’re Not Backing Down!

We’re working hard with our partners and allies to protect clean energy and its vital programs. Organizations like MnSEIA, Solar United Neighbors Action, and CEEM are organizing meetings and keeping the pressure on.

What MnSEIA and TruNorth Solar are Asking YOU To Do

Your engagement is needed to help protect Net Metering in Minnesota. MnSEIA continues to work closely with Senate members internally to kill this bill, but the Democratic process plays a critical role in these negotiations and your voice has a meaningful impact

The next 24 hours are crucial. Senate leaders are making decisions right now that will impact your solar investment and that of future solar customers. Calls and emails to Senators by Solar workforce and customers are needed in the next 24 hours before 5pm on Wednesday, April 9th.

Here are the steps and process to follow to complete this outreach. It contains templates and scripts with messages you can use to get your voice heard.

Step One – finding who to contact and their contact information.

  • Search your address at Geographic Information Services | Who Represents Me?
  • A list of all elected officials will appear – select ONLY the name of the person who is your MN Senator and click on “Contact” next to their name.
  • For Emails: Many Senators use a mailform instead of publishing their email address. If yours does, use this attached PDF to locate your Senator’s email address, and the email address of their legislative assistant.
  • For phone calls: Use the phone number of your Senator’s Legislative Assistant.
  • Please also contact Senator Erin Murphy, the Senate majority leader, with your concerns.

Step Two – Calls and Emails.

Your Solar Story Matters! Tell them why you’re an advocate for solar and how it’s benefited you. A personal story from a constituent is incredibly powerful.
